HOST (TRIPLE EYE): Welcome back to the drive, everyone, you’re locked in with Triple Eye on The Music Business Squeeze. We just wrapped up that new track that’s been literally everywhere this week, and it got me thinking. I want to talk about how we actually found that song.
Think about it. Ten, fifteen years ago, you discovered music because someone like me played it on the radio, or an A&R guy in a fancy suit at a major label decided it was a hit. But today? In 2026? Those guys in suits aren’t running the show anymore. The new bosses of the music industry live right inside your pocket. I’m talking about TikTok and Instagram.
[SFX: A quick, recognizable social media notification ‘pop’ sound]
HOST: Let’s talk about TikTok first. It is no longer just a place for 15-second dance challenges; it is the undisputed heavyweight champion of the Billboard charts. Get this: last year, an absolutely mind-blowing 84 percent of the songs that entered the Billboard Global 200 went viral on TikTok first. 84 percent!
And they are locking down the entire ecosystem. TikTok just inked a massive, exclusive deal with Apple Music. Now, when you hear a hook you like on your For You Page, you don’t even have to leave the app. You just hit “Play Full Song,” and the whole track streams right there. They’re keeping you inside their walled garden.
And if you think they’re leaving traditional radio alone, think again. TikTok just partnered with iHeartMedia to launch “TikTok Radio” nationwide. They literally rewrote the blueprint for album launches.
[SFX: Record scratch, beat switches]
HOST: But wait, don’t count Meta out. While TikTok is the undisputed king of viral discovery, Instagram is claiming the crown for something even more valuable: Superfans.
According to a 2026 study by Luminate, Instagram is the music industry’s biggest superfan hub. They found that 58 percent of music superfans use Instagram to engage with artists.
When artists successfully engage fans on Instagram, their streaming numbers jump significantly year-over-year. Meta is proving their platform translates directly into real-world revenue.
[SFX: Tone becomes more serious]
HOST: So here is the reality: ByteDance and Meta are the new gatekeepers. The tech giants now control discovery to monetization.
And that brings me to you. I’m opening up the lines—because I’ve got 10 questions for you.
1. Who is really discovering your new favorite artist—are you, or the algorithm?
2. Does it bother you that platforms keep you inside one ecosystem?
3. Are tech CEOs shaping the charts more than musicians?
4. Are you a fan—or a data point?
5. Is music quality improving—or optimized for short attention spans?
6. Is local radio losing its soul?
7. Are artists becoming influencers first?
8. Would you rather support artists directly?
9. Is authenticity already gone in the AI era?
10. Is this democratization—or just new gatekeepers?
